Nicknamed the “Switzerland of America”, Ouray sits at the mouth of a valley and is surrounded on three sides by the towering peaks of the San Juan Mountain range, part of the Rocky Mountains. A former mining town, there are few remnants left. The old Blue Bird Mine, which was operated from 1896 to 1990, is the second largest gold mine in Colorado, but also produced silver.
Remnants from the Idarado gold mine are visible from the Million Dollar Highway, between Ouray and Silverton, Colorado. This mine is significant because its mine tunnels extend five-miles under the 13,000-foot peaks of the San Juans to the Pandora Mill in Telluride (a 60-mile trip by road).
