Homeowners Insurance Refresher Course

We blog about this every now and then, but when is the last time you really looked at your homeowner’s policy? If you haven’t had a look, autumn’s a great time to get your household finances in line and have another look-see at your current policy.

Not unlike auto insurance, your homeowner’s policy can be something of a commoditized thing. If you’ve kept your policy in the same place for any period of time, you owe it to yourself to shop around. Coverages don’t vary greatly from company to company, so see who’s going to give you the best deal for your mandatory insurance needs.

Also, it’s a wise idea to assess your level of coverage. Do you have too much? Too little? Does your policy have an inflation protection provision that automatically adjusts your coverage? You may want to skip the inflation protection and adjust your coverage to a fair market value instead – you could notice considerable savings on your annual premiums.

If you’re shopping for a home, be sure to check with your insurer before signing on the dotted line. Why? Because you just might find your dream home is in a high claims area (like one prone to flooding) and your premiums will suffer as a result.

Now, as we look towards fall with open eyes and, well, a coat on, we hope to see you out and about town this holiday weekend. Be sure to check our Local Events Calendar for the latest in the San Juans region and if you see us, say hello! We’re wishing you a safe and celebratory holiday.
