To Buy or Not to Buy?

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Job figures are daunting…foreclosure rates are reportedly still on the rise. We wonder if the stimulus plan will stimulate or further aggravate our economy. With questions such as these consistently looming, our clients continue to ask the age-old question: to buy or not to buy?

Our response?

We don’t know.

Nor will we pretend to know. We won’t lie to our clients and say that prices have hit the bottom and that there won’t be a “better deal” a few months down the road. What we will do, however, is provide each and every client with the best advice possible that’s relevant to their personal situation.

This week, we wanted to provide you with a solid list of tools and questions for you to take into your personal buying scenario. They’re relevant no matter where you live and no matter what kind of home you’re looking to buy. Better tools and information let us all ask better questions – and hopefully, make a decision that we’re happy with for years to come.

  • Financing: Plan on beginning the mortgage process six months in advance of your anticipated home purchase. Collect 3 years of tax returns, and 6 months worth of pay stubs, bank and financial account records, and run your credit at all three credit bureaus. Planning ahead like this will help prevent any surprises and put you in the most favorable position possible as you look to acquire your dream home.
  • Research and Relationships: We encourage every client to get to know us, our brokers and the way we do business. There’s no reason you shouldn’t interview a real estate professional just like a job candidate. We look at it this way: the San Juan Realty, Inc. family has a wide array of personalities and areas of expertise, and we’re bound to have a professional on our staff that not only meets your needs, but exceeds your expectations! It’s not every day that you spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a home – we take the buying experience of each an every client to heart. Taking the time to get to know a real estate professional and interview several potential candidates will let you enter into your buying scenario with confidence.
  • Make a List, Check it Twice: Sit down and make a list of the most important qualities in your future home. “Must Haves,” “Would Likes,” and “Deal Breakers.” Share this list with your chosen real estate professional and they’ll definitely thank you! And it’s highly possible you’ll discover some things in the process that you weren’t even aware of when you sat down to write your list!

As always, the staff of San Juan Realty, Inc. would be delighted to work with you to help you get to know our beautiful, bountiful region and locate the home of your dreams. We’re hoping that, even if you’re not looking to buy in our area, the above list will help you be better prepared for what should be one of the most exhilarating experiences of your life: buying a home!
