Wind-Up for Independence Day

Friday, June 17th, 2011

We know quite a few people host July 4th parties and we’re sure this year will be no exception. The countdown is on to one of the year’s favorite family holidays, so we thought we’d put together a list that will help you plan without all those last-minute rushes to the grocery and home improvement stores at the eleventh hour!

  • Get the yard ready: The 4th is on a Monday this year (thank you, three day weekend!), so if you have a lawn service, make sure they come no later than the Friday before for your weekly service.
  • Talk to your neighbors: Parking in neighborhoods can come at a premium on busy holiday weekends. Ask around and if multiple neighbors are hosting get togethers, consider asking guests to ride their bikes to your house to save on street congestion.
  • Warehouse stores: Save yourself the grocery store lines and head to your local warehouse store to stock up. Grilling supplies like meat and buns can be stored in the freezer pre-party, just don’t forget to defrost!
  • Fireworks safety: If you’re in an area where fireworks are permitted, watering down your roof and the trees in your yard along with bushes lining the street is a sound fire prevention practice. Keep fireworks away from combustible materials and yards and launch on concrete or pavement with plenty of surrounding area if possible. (And know your local laws!)

Be sure to keep an eye on our local events calendar for all that’s happening in the San Juans as July 4th gets closer.
