Winter Rules! Four to Follow

The first snow’s landed here in Colorado, so that has us thinking about what we need to do to batten-down the hatches for the upcoming snowy season. Beyond covering the bushes and bringing everything inside from the backyard, there are a few things you might not have considered. We’ll list those here today and maybe they’ll inspire you to think of your own ways to make the upcoming winter a safer one!

  • Got pets? If you’re using ice/snow melt pellets for your sidewalks and driveways, be sure that they’re pet-safe. When in question, you can stop by your local Petco or Petsmart or other pet retailer. They always have a ready supply of pellets that are friendly for creatures with anywhere from two to four feet.
  • Water usage. Keep an eye on that water bill! Frozen pipes can cause evens low leaks. If you have monthly billing, monitor these numbers carefully throughout the cold season, as a slow leak can cause expensive damage.
  • Gutters. While the snow is light, get those gutters cleaned out. Leaves and pine needles will make is harder for runoff to flow as temperatures warm, putting undue strain on your roof and gutters.
  • Hoses. Hang them up and dry them out. Detach from spigots. If you need to use one this winter, best to know they’re ready and waiting instead of an icy coil!

Stop by our local events calendar and see what’s happening in our neck of the woods. Enjoy the early winter, heat up that fireplace and stay warm!
